Academic Freedom: Neither Free Nor Academic

Today's reason why liberals suck comes to us from Mona Charen:

Extremism in defense of violence is no vice?

"Defenders of the Middle Eastern studies department are naturally framing the question as a rights matter, in this case, free speech. But that is not the proper perspective. The more pertinent question is: Do our great universities live up to their commitment to free inquiry, serious scholarship and intellectual honesty by staffing their faculties with the Ward Churchills, Rashid Khalidis and Joseph Massads of the world?"

Today's reason why liberals suck: Ward Churchill compares 9/11 victims to Nazis and is celebrated as an example of "academic freedom", while Lawrence Summers suggests that there may be inate differences between men and women and is practically lynched by the Harvard faculty committee. The hypocricy is staggering, although sadly, not surprising.

Just don't call it "welfare", or you'll make the AARP mad

The Washington Post has an editorial today on all the hidden sources of welfare in our society that we don't really regard as "welfare":

Welfare Junkies

The article makes a very salient point: if Social Security pays out more than it gets in from its recipients, it's not forced saving, social insurance or a "retirement investiment" plan. It's welfare. And until we start thinking of it as such, we aren't going to be able to fix it.

Death Becomes Them

This will be my last post on Terri Schiavo. The courts seemed determined to "let her go", and so will I, although I don't think any of us who respect life will EVER forget this horrific case. That being said, Peggy Noonan has a great article in the Wall Street Journal:

In Love With Death: The bizarre passion of the pull-the-tube people

Today's reason why liberals suck: Right now, Terry Schiavo is dying in a manner that they wouldn't allow a dog to die.

The Kangaroo Court of Public Opinion

It's not enough that the courts aren't stepping in to help Terry Schiavo. Now ABC has conducted an opinion poll that would put any political operative who knows anything about "slant" polls to shame:

The Shame of ABC

Terri Schavo is not on life support. She requires a feeding tube to eat, which is distinct from the ventilators and machines that many Americans think of when they think of life support. The ability of Terri to think and be aware is disputed because the amount of therapy and tests she has received recently have been extremely limited by her husband. The irony of the ABC poll is that other polls show a majority of Americans agree with Michael Shiavo on this. Today's reason why liberals suck: even when they're winning, it isn't enough.

The opposite of a culture of life is?

Brendan Miniter has a nice piece on the culture of life in the Wall Street Journal today:

Culture of Life

The piece is great, so I'll keep my part short: more and more, our society is making judgments on whose life is and is not worth living. We abort babies regardless of how close they are to being born, we allow doctors to "help" the sick take their own lives, we destroy embryos like they're fingernails. Today's reason why liberals suck: they don't get why that's a problem.

All We Are Saying is Give Life A Chance

Teri Schiavo's case has brought many life issues to the forefront, including assisted suicide, as discussed in this New York Times article:

New Openness In Deciding When and How to Die

A few more steps in this direction and the United States might start to resemble Europe, where "euthanasia" among the elderly has become so common in the Netherlands that nursing homes in Germany are starting to open up specifically to become a safehaven for elderly in the Netherlands who fear becoming involuntarily "euthanized"--or, as we like to call it in the United States, murdered. Dr. Stevens has an exactly right: "We say we want this because of choice," he said. "My concern is, in the future, will this become the only choice?" Today's reason why liberals suck: at least these people have a terminal illness and are choosing to die--neither of these criteria apply to Ms. Schiavo, whose only "terminal illness" is a husband who has moved on with his life, started another family, and is unwilling to provide further treatment for Teri.

Fair and Balanced it Ain't

Today's reason why liberals suck comes to us from the national "paper of record", the New York Times:

Two Years After Iraq Invasion, Protesters Hold Small Rallies

Why does this article make our list? It isn't the protestors--it's their first amendment right to protest as long as they aren't destroying property or endangering public safety. It's the article itself--a "news" article from a supposedly objective paper of record describes the protestors as "the home guard of the antiwar movement". Apparently, "three dozen people were arrested in New York for blocking traffic or doorways at military recruiting centers, but these were choreographed with the time-honored rituals of civil disobedience" (Are you kidding me? I had to double-check the section I was reading after seeing that sentence to make sure I hadn't accidentally stumbled upon a Maureen Dowd column). The column goes on and on. It doesn't read like news--it reads like bad poetry glorifying the anti-war movement. Today's reason why liberals suck: they criticize Fox News for being "conservative", yet they refuse to acknowledge that other, older media outlets have a liberal bias that is just as pronounced as anything on Fox News.
