The opposite of a culture of life is?

Brendan Miniter has a nice piece on the culture of life in the Wall Street Journal today:

Culture of Life

The piece is great, so I'll keep my part short: more and more, our society is making judgments on whose life is and is not worth living. We abort babies regardless of how close they are to being born, we allow doctors to "help" the sick take their own lives, we destroy embryos like they're fingernails. Today's reason why liberals suck: they don't get why that's a problem.

great article. I have two questions to which I have yet to ever hear a cogent or non-hysterical or non-knee jerk answer (and, because I am a racial-minority, double-Ivy-degree-holding, blue-state dwelling woman with a genius IQ, the usual kinds of name-calling have not been available to my questionees, which seems to be a source of some frustration):

- If the woman must have "the right to choose", what about the "fetus"? what happened to ITS right to choose? I'm gonna bet most of them wouldn't "choose" to be terminated. And I don't want to hear that they don't have the ability to choose, therefore they don't have the right. By that argument, children don't have rights either (under the law, they aren't competent until they turn 18). Nor do mentally challenged people, or people who've been temporarily knocked unconscious in a fight, or anyone who is asleep. Ridiculous.
- If women can blithely have abortions because they "have the right to choose", why should I ever go to a baby shower, or bill and coo over a friend's pregnancy, or be sad for a friend who suffers a miscarriage? Either a "fetus" worth something or it's not. You can't have it both ways. That's like saying a dog is a dog if you want it to be, and if you don't, then ok, it's a hunk of cheese. Inherently absurd. [this one REALLY pisses people off. wonder why.]

This latter point was really dramatically highlighted throughout the Scott Peterson trial. People were all bent out of shape and ESPECIALLY outraged because of the "unborn son". Oh, so now all of a sudden it's a human that SHOULDN'T have been killed? so if Laci had gotten an abortion, that would have been ok, but Scott killing the "fetus" (indirectly) is not?

It's enough to make you want to bang your head on the wall.

You're absolutely right. It IS contradictory that a wanted unborn child is called a "baby" and legally protected while an unwanted child is called "tissue" and aborted. The Left is willing to overlook this contradiction. I, on the other hand, am not.
